Recently I was asked by Voyage ATL to respond to their question of the month, “What’s the Best Advice You’ve Ever Received?”. Instantly a billion of my mom’s sayings popped into my head, like “Use your head for more than a hat rack” or “There’s no point in crying over spilled milk”. Her favorite is “And, what did you learn? Ok, now save that lesson for next time”. Every time something happens I can usually pin point what she’ll say before I even begin to tell her the story.
My dad was no different when it came to witty, but helpful pieces of advice. Probably my most favorite of his, and one that I quote the most often, is when he told me “You can say whatever you need to as long as you know how to say it.” When I speak my mind, I never worry about regretting it because I make sure what I said had meaning behind it, and that I said what I meant and meant want I said.
We have all received both good and bad advice, but the best advice are the tokens that stick with us forever. They are the gems that help guide you through your daily lives. It is the lesson that someone taught intentionally or maybe even unintentionally. Advice is a building block for the moments that help shape and mold us. It not only comes from your parents or adults, but it comes from friends and peers too. The best advice is a life guideline that someday you’ll have the opportunity to pass on to someone else.
